We live in a Society

So I was reading through a book called To Be a Jew which teaches basic foundations of orthodox rabbinic Judaism but the part on the Sabbath made me think that they might be onto something. Now not completely, the Tanakh (Jewish Bible) is full of hateful content that should be recognized as hateful and should be rebuked but we can still exctract some good ideas from within. In todays age it seems like we are always working, even when we are given some time to relax and to enjoy our hobbies we still work. For example, it might be Friday night and you're about to watch a movie but then you remember that you could be working on something else, you could be reading that book you put off, you could be doing that assignment, you could finish up that presentation, you could practice some of your skills. After this you forget about the movie you were about to watch and now you can't think about anything but that work.

I think we can extract some value from the Jewish Sabbath. The Sabbath lasts from sundown on Friday, to night fall on Saturday when you can see the stars. Now there are a lot of weird rules in the faith that I don't think everyone should observe as they are just not useful and impose ridiculous restrictions. I won't go into too much detail but some rules prohibit against igniting a fire, which means you cannot drive on that day, or you can't write which means you can't take notes or draw or paint, or move objects too far in your house, or move things from your house to outside or vice versa. Away with these rules I say. But the main idea is good, that of rest.

On a day, or even just a couple of hours on a day, or however you wish to implement this, you should give yourself some time to rest, and I mean fully rest, so that you won't even bother working on that presentation, or that assignment, or something else. This is your time and nothing should interrupt you. This may be difficult in todays digital age with constant emails and notifications, which is why you should mute them for a time so that they cannot distract you while you're halfway through watching an episode of The Office. This will cleanse your mind and will increase your productivity in the days to come.
